Biannual wader counts in North-west Tasmania in 2026: a summary Ray Pierce raypierce@bigpond.com and Hazel Britton hazpet@bigpond.com Introduction Biannual wader counts were undertaken in North-west Tasmania in February and June 2026, continuing the long-term surveys initiated by BirdLife Tasmania in 1996. The NW summer count occurred at late notice and presented some logistical issues, including not being able to align ideal tidal heights with availability of vessels and counters, with vessel-based surveys occurring five days later. The winter count went to plan however, with suitable high tides (3.5 m) coinciding with fine weather, the availability of two vessels and many experienced and new counters. Results and Discussion Results from the summer count are summarised in Table 1 and the winter count in Table 2.
