Swift Parrots Beating the Odds: findings from two seasons of intensive monitoring By Matt Webb and Leanne Wicker (Landscape Recovery Foundation) The swift parrot (Lathamus discolor) is one of Australia's most threatened birds, breeding only in Tasmania. Loss of breeding habitat and predation by sugar gliders (Krefft’s Glider) have both been identified as significant threats to the species. Improving our understanding of the factors that influence breeding success is listed as a priority con- servation action under the species’ National Recovery Plan. Over two consecutive breeding seasons (2024/25 and 2025/26) and building on close to two decades of long-term population monitoring, we conducted the most comprehensive field-based investigation of swift parrot nesting outcomes yet undertaken on mainland Tasmania.
