Hooded Plover breeding success at Cape Portland 1996-2019 By Ralph Cooper This paper presents updated coverage of breeding success in Hooded Plovers at Cape Portland compared with data presented in a previous article in the Tasmanian Bird Report No. 22 (1993). The latter analysis was based on only six surveys and showed a juvenile recruitment rate of 19%. A 24-year data set is now available, during which Hooded Plovers were recorded in every year. The best numerical samples covering 17 of those years have been selected to present here: seven years have been omitted. Use of a vehicle makes it possible to visit all known flocking areas in one survey. Surveys were carried out from March to June to cover the optimal flocking time. By the end of June, the white flecking of the developing adult black hood is beginning to moult out. A colleague and I once agreed on ‘frosty crowns’ to describe birds in this last stage.
