BirdLife Tasmania News H5 Bird Flu in Tasmania - Current Situation Mark Holdsworth OAM Sadly, but not unexpectedly, H5 Bird Flu (H5N1) has been detected in wild birds across the north of the State. The first detection was in a Brown Skua at Rocky Cape in early August and has now been confirmed in Crested Tern, Sil- ver Gull, Little Penguin and Forest Raven. Over coming months, the numbers of individuals and list of species infect- ed will grow significantly, with some species suffering mass mortalities. Unfortunately, it is not possible to vaccinate most wild birds, and the current vaccination trials are restricted mostly to captive threatened species (e.g. Orange- bellied Parrot), under strict protocols to measure effectiveness. The Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) has established an Incident Management Team (IMT) under the Biosecurity Act 2019 to manage the response in accord with the Tasmanian Avian Influenza Readiness and Response Plan.
