BirdLife Tasmania Outing reports The Springs, kunanyi: 20 June 2026 Paul Brooks Hobart turned on a glorious, albeit chilly, winter’s morning for the June outing at The Springs on the slopes of mighty kunanyi. Our first birds came easily, when we saw some Black Currawongs perched in the tops of eucalypts at The Springs car park: we got to hear their insane cackling throughout the morning. Soon after setting out on the Lenah Valley Track towards Sphinx Rock, we flushed a Bassian Thrush although the bird wasn’t particularly friendly and wouldn’t oblige the whole group with a look. We could hear action all around us early on and soon got good looks at both Brown and Tasmanian Thornbills and were able to compare the best features to use to separate the species. Tasmanian Scrubwrens were vocal, but were less inclined to show themselves, although we all had decent views at some point over the journey.
