The newsletter for British Red Cross volunteers and staff in London Area This year's theme will be British history and heritage, under the banner of Different Pasts, Shared Futures, sharing the positive contribution refugees have made to Britain throughout history. The Red Cross has a long and rich tradition of providing assistance to refugees, with the first records dating back to the Turco-Greek war in 1897 to the present day and we now help 10,000 people every year. We will be telling the story of refugee services in the Red Cross through an interactive timeline on the Red Cross website and sharing the history of 116 years of support, including orientation, destitution, support for young people and women, family reunion and resettlement and emergency-scale arrivals. International refugee day is on 20 June. This was declared in 2001 through a UN General Assembly Declaration, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. (Read more on page
