Pemulen™ polymeric emulsiiers have been recently introduced to cleaning procedures
for painted surfaces. These novel materials are amphiphilic polyacrylic copolymers with
enhanced properties with respect to other homologous polymers. Their main difference is that,
by hydrophobic modiication, they have been designed as primary emulsiiers with surface activity,
unlike the most commonly used such as Carbopol®, which are mainly rheology modiiers.
First and foremost developed for the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry, a theoretical and
practical review is needed to assess their use in conservation and restoration.
