OUR STORY St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church is the oldest Catholic church in Iowa City. First built at our current location in 1841, St. Mary’s expanded in 1867 in response to the growth of the parish and the wider community. For generations, St. Mary’s has been a spiritual home for Iowa City Catholics—a sacred place where people encounter Christ through prayer, the sacraments, and community. Waves of immigrants, families, university students, and other newcomers have joined St. Mary’s over the years, maintaining its mission to serve the poor and those in need. Today, honoring all who faithfully built and maintained our campus, it is time to recognize the present needs and exciting opportunities. It’s time to prepare for many more years of sharing the love of Christ.
