TOURISM IN THE ISLANDS OF TAHITI THE ACTIVITY TOURIST IN FULL EXPANSION In 2018, French Polynesia well known as « The Islands of Tahiti » benefited from the increase in air supply (up 10.5% year-on-year) with the arrival of 216,268 tourists (up 8.7% in one year). This growth is driven by cruise passengers (up 10,000 year-on-year) and tourists in land accommodation (up 7,300 in one year). Tourism business turnover increased over the year (up 2.5%), as did salaried employment in the tourism sector (up 3.4%). The United States remains the largest tourist-emitting market (35%), ahead of France (22.8%). Its weight in the Polynesian economy : Tourism is the most important sector of the Polynesian economy. It concentrates 3,317 companies at the end of December 2018 (or 12% of the total) which generate 17% of the total turnover of companies and employ 11,495 people (18% of the workforce).
