WOODBINE — A second
company has expressed interest
in the site of a proposed spaceport in Camden County.
Charlie Smith, chairman of the
Camden County Joint Development Authority, said he cannot
identify the company, but it is
also interested in launching a
spacecraft from the site at the end
of Harriett’s Bluff Road, about 10
miles east of Interstate 95.
“We have been involved with
another company,” he said.
“We’ve got another call next
week with them.”
Camden County is one of three
finalists for a spaceport.
When the Thiakol Chemical
plant was built here in 1964, it
tested and built solid propellent
rocket engines for NASA. Thick
concrete bunkers and a 12,000foot runway are still at the site.
In 1971, an explosion at the
Thiakol plant, which was manufacturing trip flares for use in the
Vietnam War, claimed the lives of
24 people.
