Amid a sea of sequins, hair spray and steam,
it’s a whole different world backstage at the
Georgia Elvis Festival. Though the 24 competitors are certainly in it to win, there’s laughter
and smiles behind the scenes, a camaraderie
that comes from the competitors loving what
they do.
Gathered Friday in the pre-performance
“green room” at the Ritz Theatre, five Elvis
tribute artists – Cote Deonath of Ocala, Fla.,
Austin Irby of Honea Path, S.C., and Anthony
Carbone, John Cigan and Matt Cage of Ontario, Canada – were prepped and waiting for their
chances to perform in the first round of the festival’s Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest.
With everyone making it through the first
round, it’s a chance for attendees to get a
glimpse of each performer and style – the Elvis
era he (and, in one case, she) portrays.
These five artists chatted like old friends,
and, as it turns out, they see each other fairly
regularly on the competition circuit.
