ST. MARYS — Naval Submarine
Base Kings Bay faces a lot of uncertainty over the next few years, and the
possibility of another round of base
closings is making some officials nervous.
The base will lose one – possibly two
– of its strongest supporters in Congress – U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss,
R-Ga., who is retiring at the end of the
year, and U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-1,
who is in a crowded field of candidates
seeking the Republican nomination to
replace Chambliss.
If Kingston fails in his bid for the Republican nomination or wins the nomination and loses in the general election
to a Democrat, U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., will be the lone representative in Congress with the seniority and
knowledge to advocate for Kings Bay.
There are also concerns about the St.
Marys Airport, which the Navy wants
closed because it considers it a security
and safety concern to Naval Submarine
Base Kings Bay.
The most recent violation may have
occurred March 27. A 19-passenger
