hen I was a young man,
I was a teacher in several
religious schools. I had
student-taught from ages 16 to 18
and had my own classroom after that.
Back in those days, I didn’t drive
and it was unfair to expect anyone
to take me to the edge of downtown
Toronto (as it was in those days!)
whenever I needed to go. And so I
took public transportation – busses
and then subways. I had to be at Holy
Blossom Temple early enough to get
the class ready and that meant getting
up at 6 am on Sunday to be out the
house and at the bus stop by 6:45.
There was probably more than one
occasion where I stood in the cold and
dark and said to myself that, one day,
I won’t have to get up on a Sunday
morning to teach. That day never
came – and I have been truly blessed
to have been able to teach for the past
