What is the tax rate for your car?
The rate of vehicle tax has been split into two categories with regard to the age of the vehicle.
The first category is for vehicles that were registered prior to March 1, 2001. Vehicle tax for a car
whose engine capacity is less than 1549 cc is £77 for six months and £140 for 12 months.
Vehicles above 1549 cc are taxed at £123.75 for six months and £225 for 12 months. For
vehicles registered after March 1, 2001, the rates of vehicle tax are based on the emissions with
separate rates for petrol, diesel vehicles and those driven on alternate fuels. For petrol and diesel
vehicles, the rates are nil for emissions less than 100 grams per kilometre. Up to 110 g/km, the
annual rate is £20 and for up to 120 g/km it is £30. From 121 g/km, the rates increase for every
10 g/km. At one step below the highest emission rate is the 226 to 255 g/km slot for which the
six-month rate is £261.25 and the 12-month rate is £475. Over 255 g/km, the vehicle tax is
