Adverse Effects of Soil Erosion and Methods to Deal with It
Soil is the earth’s fragile skin that anchors all life on earth. Soil erosion is a natural process. It has been
occurring since millions of years but erosion of soil at a much faster rate than it is formed is a more
recent problem. It is mostly because of mankind's unwise activities such as overgrazing or unsuitable
cultivation practices. Soil erosion by water, wind and farmland affects agriculture as well as the natural
environment. Today, the effect of soil erosion has gone beyond the loss of fertile land. It has led to
increased pollution and sedimentation in streams and rivers, clogging the waterways and causing death
of fish and other species under water. It is important that suitable erosion control measures are followed
to prevent and reduce movement of eroded soil sediments off-site. Selection of the proper erosion
control measure must take into consideration the extent and type of erosion as well as the resources
