June marks the start of the winter fire
season in the northern and eastern parts of
the country and with that, the possibility of
several dangers.
This season will last until October 31 and
fire danger has now moved up to moderate.
The bit of recent rain only stalled the start of
this period and experts say it was not enough
to stop or reverse the long-term drying trend.
The light rain dampened the grass and
brush at the lower elevation, but was not
enough to prevent fires.
The beginning of fire spell means that the
burning of debris, other than in burn barrels
for those with permits, is prohibited.
The start of this is determined when
vegetation becomes dry and fires are harder
to control.
Uncontrolled fires are a problem
because they pose a risk to life,
property, and the environment. The
expansion of human settlements across
the countryside, into areas bordering fireadapted conservation areas and vulnerable
commercial agriculture, has put people
increasingly at risk from runaways.
