“F.A.Gauthier” will be the first LNG-powered ferry to operate in North America, when delivered. LNG-fuelled ferries already in operation in Europe include Finnish shipping company Viking Line’s “Viking Grace”. The first American LNG-fuelled vessel, Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) “Harvey Energy” began operations in the US state of Louisiana in February. The ferry was launched at the Fincantieri shipyard in Naples last month and was halfway to its destination last week as it passed the Azores islands of Portugal. On arrival in Matane, Quebec, it will provide a service crossing the St. Lawrence River. “F.A.Gauthier” is the first in a series of gas-fuelled vessels built to Lloyd’s Register class standards for STQ, and also the first LNG-powered ferry to be built in Italy. The ferry is LloydsRegister-classed, 133-metres long and certified as ice class, with capacity for 800 passengers and 180 vehicles.
