Weekly News 12 September 2014 T he project is still at a technical feasibility stage but is part of a growing trend for mobile, floating power plants operated on gas. Several factors have conspired in recent years to boost the viability of offshore power plants, most notably: a lack of available space in densely populated urban areas, improved shipping technology and wider availability of LNG as fuel. “The power situation in Japan after the Fukushima disaster has encouraged us to propose this solution,” Fredrik Major, Sevan’s chief business development officer said. The floating plant envisioned by Sevan will be located on a cylindrical platform 106 metres and would include turbine generators from Siemens. Mobile power ships set to compete from 2017 The Sevan project follows plans from Siemens at the end of last year to develop a floating power ship by 2017, in collaboration with Hyundai.
