Open Gold Panning Championships come to town. The Vernon Placer Mining Club invites everyone to come to Riverside Park for a weekend of family activities, gold panning events, draws, games and a silent auction. The fun starts with a music jam Friday night at 7 p.m. followed by a night metal detecting contest at 9:30 p.m. with no lights or digging tools permitted. There is a pancake breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings starting at 7 a.m. at the Lions gazebo for just $5 and a metal detecting contest each morning at 9 a.m. You can also win gold nuggets at the games for $1-$5 and try your luck at the raffle prizes each day. You can take part in the competitions by first learning the finer points of panning from expert panners for $3, keeping any gold you pan. Competition starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the top 10 in each categor
