I was first acquainted with the
name Renato Gamba in the
early 1980's as a teenager
through an American firearm
publication, namely
“Peterson's Hunting”. This monthly
publication invariably contained an advert
for 2 side-by-side shotguns manufactured
by Renato Gamba, namely the “Oxford”
boxlock and “London” sidelock. What was
immediately apparent, even from the
photos, was that both of these guns were
not only clearly fairly high-grade firearms,
but also rather beautifully proportioned.
The gun which started it all for this concern
was however not a gun even sold under
the Renato Gamba name, but a gun
manufactured by Renato Gamba for a very
well-known and influential German
concern, Dynamit Nobel. In the late 1970's,
Renato Gamba manufactured an over/under
shotgun known as the “Rottweil”, which
was, and still is, a registered trade mark of
Dynamit Nobel.
