Panera Bread’s history begins first with the history of another. Au Bon Pain Co. Inc.,
purchased a chain of bakery-cafes called Saint Louis Bread Company. Then they re-staged some
of the concept to create Panera Bread. Au Bon Pain sold its other chains in May 1999 to expand
Panera Bread into a national restaurant. Today, the company operates more than 1,500 bakerycafes in more than 40 states.
Panera Bread is a company with a mission to provide the community with fresh and
healthy food choices, particularly focusing on bread. The official mission statement is “a loaf of
bread in every arm.” Panera Bread bakery-cafes help customers appreciate and enjoy quality
loaves of bread by showcasing the art of bread making. Panera Bread understands that great
