Thermoset Plastic Offers a Wide Range of Utility
Although it has been around for more than a century, thermoset plastic continues to be a
workhorse in commercial and industrial applications thanks to their strength and light
weight. These plastics have a wide variety of uses, including disparate areas such as
kitchenware, furniture knobs and handles and electronics, among many others.
Thermoset was first developed in 1906 by Dr. Leo Bakeland, a Belgian-born scientist,
when he experimented with the polymerization of phenolic resins by adding
formaldehyde and heat. Combined with later work adding cotton cloth and paper
materials along with semicuring and hydraulic pressing, thermoset laminates were born.
