annual Lee Historical Fair and Syrup Sopping Day
On Oct. 19, the small town of Loachapoka will grow in population from under 200 to
over 20,000. Loachapoka is just six miles outside of Auburn but easily goes unnoticed until fall
comes around and they have the annual Lee County Historical Fair and Syrup Sopping Day.
This year will mark the 41st
year. Gene Smith, president of Syrup Sopping Day, has been
involved with it from the beginning. “It’s the 41st
year and I am 42” Smith said.
The event began after the men of Loachapoka formed a Ruritan Club. “The ladies wanted
a club so they formed the Ladies Improvement Club four years later,” Smith said. In 1972 the
groups organized a syrup sop and historical fair. The town of Loachapoka was known for their
fine tasting syrup made from sorghum and ribbon cane.
The Loachapoka Community Club is responsible for putting together Syrup Sopping Day
and The Loachapoka Historical Society is responsible for the fair. Both groups work together to
