All right Tiger fans, get your hands up for Bodda Getta!
“Bodda getta, bodda getta, bodda getta, bah…”
I remember going to my first pep rally as an almost-student of Auburn University during
my Camp War Eagle session. They gave us a small paper with cheers, and one easily stood
out to me. The title was “Bodda Getta.” I remember thinking, “what on earth is a bodda
getta?” Little did I know that the Bodda Getta cheer was as well-known to Auburn fans as
Toomer’s Oaks, the eagle flying, and Aubie.
While flipping through Kelly Kazek’s Hidden History of Auburn, I came across a section
explaining the Auburn tradition of Bodda Getta. I wanted to know where this cheer came
from, so I started reading. To my surprise, there is no real answer to when, why, and how
the chant came about – there are only guesses based on memories of Auburn alumni.
I asked a few Auburn students where and when they thought the cheer first came about.
