Jessica O’Malley Dijon School Trip Reflection It was extremely valuable to take part in a trip to France to visit Middle School Roland Dorgelès in Dijon. I was able to see how difficult it may be for an EAL pupil, in an English speaking classroom, to understand what was going on around them as I experienced first-hand how hard it is to comprehend a language you are only vaguely familiar with. This gave me a chance to reflect on my own teaching, as when I taught the French pupils I slowed down my speech and used more hand gestures and facial expressions to ensure the pupils could access what I was saying. This is something that I will keep in mind in my NQT year, when I may have an EAL pupil in my class. It was enlightening to see how there are many similarities between the schools in England and schools in France. We were able to see how both countries and their schools are under enormous amounts of pressure to succeed and follow a curriculum planned by the government. Yet, I was also
