Magnesium stearate is a white substance, solid at room temperature, used in the manufacture of
pharmaceutical and supplement tablets and capsules. It is composed of magnesium and stearic
acid, and oftentimes, palmitic acid as well.
Magnesium stearate is manufactured from both animal and vegetable oils. Some nutritional
supplements specify that the magnesium stearate used is sourced from vegetables.
Magnesium stearate is composed of stearic acid and the essential mineral magnesium. The
compound contains between 6.8 and 8.3 percent of magnesium oxide combined with pure stearic
acid and palmitic acid. Stearic acid makes up at least 40 percent of the compound, and combined
with palmitic acid, makes up at least 90 percent of the substance, according to supplement
