Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) Complex
IHI E&C provided basic design and EPC and assisted with plant commissioning and startup of the first
fully integrated and most cost-effective MTBE complex in the world when constructed in 1992.

Highlights
• Initiated commercial application of the then Phillips Company Steam Active Reforming (STAR)
dehydrogenation process
• This first of a kind facility integrated technologies from several licensors to convert field butanes
to MTBE, these included:
o Isomerization (Engelhard)
o Dehydrogenation (Phillips)
o Methanol (ICI)
o MTBE (Phillips)
• Completed engineering and construction in record 18 months
• Completed construction in 12 mo
