Fire season nearly over, but....Larry Bentley
FIRE fighters, farmers, foresters
and landowners are preparing to
stand down after the 2011 fire
season in Zululand, but will remain on high alert as nature always tends to throw a last ‘curved
ball’ just as everyone relaxes.
This fire season saw the teams
associated with the Zululand Fire
Protection Association (ZFPA) attend to 204 fires by mid-October.
The biggest fire along the coast
was the 200ha of Eucalyptus (gum
tree) coppice regeneration which
was burnt next to the landfill site
at Mtubatuba.
According to ZFPA’s Tony
Roberts the season saw more Red,
Orange and Yellow Fire Danger
Index (FDI) days during August,
September and October than any
previous years.
