The operation lasted nearly one month from July 10th to August 4th
1944 but it wasn't a
success. John arrived near Hill 112 at 5.00 am in the morning. In his battalion, there were 830 men,
525 were wounded or killed. On Hill 112, Germans were on one side and British soldiers were on
the other side. It was not until August 4th
that the hill was cleared and that the Germans disappeared.
They had anti-tank guns, mortars, carriers, panniers.
John was in command of a support company,
his mission was to establish the headquarters
for the battalion . He was responsible of five
soldiers: 1 batman, 3 pioneers and another one.
With the six, one was killed and 2 others were
wounded. From 6 people, there were 3 others
left.
He had a pack, a bag, water, binoculars, a
riffle, a pistol and a little spade.
That was an attack for a division. In one
divison there were 9 battalions but 6 battalions
