Professor: Horror genre misrepresents minorities film and theatre Movie directors, writers create misunderstanding by playing off of stereotypes. By Madelyn Edward The Shorthorn staff Misconceptions about minority cultures creep their way into horror films, said Safisha Hill, AfricanAmerican studies adjunct professor. The word “savage” is not a word Stephanie Vielle wants to describe her culture, the Native American Student Association president said. Yet, Native Americans are depicted as savages in some horror films, the political science senior said. Movies, such as Poltergeist (1982 and 2015), refer to curses or hauntings as a result of building on native burial ground.
