The state could give UTA
the authority to purchase land
parcels in a residential neighborhood east of the College
Park District this legislative
session.
If passed, House Bill 1753,
by Rep.
Diane Patrick, R-Arlington, would allow UTA to
purchase parcels as property
owners sell their land and as
university funds allow.
Sen.
Kelly Hancock, R-Fort
Worth, filed Senate Bill 842 in
the Senate that would allow
UTA to purchase the same
land.
“This is very much a local
issue and typically there is very
little objection from legislators,” Patrick said.
Patrick is the vice chairwoman of the House Committee on Higher Education and a
former UTA faculty member.
Neither bill authorizes
the state or university to use
eminent domain, which is the
power to seize private property
without the owner’s consent.
