University police will soon post
flyers and pamphlets around campus
regarding bicycle theft, said senior
guard Paul Kastner, who works in
crime prevention.
The literature, still in the approval
process, comes after a recent spree
of bike thefts from the campus and
university housing.
According to police reports, the
department received seven reports
of stolen bikes in June and 14 so far
this month.
Of the 21 bicycles reported stolen this summer, 15 were
taken from university housing.
Eight
of those thefts, or 38 percent of all
reported this summer, occurred at
Centennial Court apartments.
Engineering degreed undergraduate Kevin Smalls is one of the victims.
Smalls lives in a university apartment,
is taking math classes this summer
and was, until July 4, the owner of a
new mountain bike.
Instead of watching fireworks
that night, Smalls decided to study
for college algebra.
