Film review: Les Miserables
One of the most expected films this year was Les Miserables, an adaptation of the
famous musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg which is in turn based
on Les Misérables, the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo.
The film is directed by Tom
Hooper and scripted by William Nicholson.
The story is set in France in 1815 and spans 17
years.
The plot revolves around the story of Jean
Valjean (Hugh Jackman), a prisoner who is released
on parole after 19 years.
He tries to find a place to
stay but because of his parole, nobody wants to be
with him.
One night he goes to a monastery and tries
to steal the entire Bishop’s silver, but, by surprise of
Valjean, when the Bishop finds out, he gives him
more than he took.
With this money, Valjean breaks
his parole and starts a new life and after 8 years, he
becomes the major of a town.
Fantine (Anne
Hathaway), a worker from one of his factories is
fired because she sends money to her illegitimate
daughter.
