The Canadian Code of Practice for Consumer Protection in Electronic Commerce is responsible for
setting standards of ethical business practice for merchants who conduct consumer e-commerce.
The code endorses the transparent and accurate depiction of any data that may influence a
consumer into conducting a transaction with that merchant.
The merchant should ensure that
information and all links are up to date and that objective claims can be substantiated.
A merchant must clearly identify himself on a website and provide policy information and contact
details for consumers to direct questions, complaints or warranty issues to a dependable source.
Before a transaction is completed, an accurate description of the goods and the applicable warranty
information must be supplied.
A record of the transaction must be sent to the consumer.
