[5a] Earliest mentions The first mentions of the Œuvre Notre-Dame (Opus Sancte Marie) and of the magistri operis – those in charge of the construction site and the fabric – appear in a manu- script compiled between 1224 and 1228. This document is a collection of various records, including a cartulary (a list of deeds, donations, and bequests) and an obituary (a register of deceased members) of the Chapter, which notably record donations of land. The earliest seal, affixed to a charter from 1290, depicts a church façade with three portals, surmounted by a gable and two towers. The slopes of the gable, together with the cross crowning it, form a shape resembling what would later become the distinctive emblem of the Œuvre Notre-Dame. The Latin inscription reads Fabrice Ecclesiae Argentinensis – meaning “Fabric of the Church of Strasbourg” – later to become the Œuvre Notre-Dame.
