"Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes
were prevented from recognizing him." Can you imagine this scene? Jesus comes up next to these two disciples, walks with them, talks with
them, even goes so far as to explain the Scriptures about him to them,
and they still fail to notice who he is. Understandably, they were sad,
"looking downcast" because of Christ's death. Maybe their eyes glumly
watched their feet as they trod along instead of taking in the sights
around them. But at some point they must have looked at their companion's face. Why didn't they recognize Jesus until "he took bread, said the
blessing, broke it, and gave it to them"?
In everything else during their encounter, Jesus had appeared to
be just another man. But when he broke the bread, in fact celebrating the
