How to Make a Pencil Portrait
You can draw a simple sketch or portrait of a face from a
photograph or from life.
Depending on how easily you draw your
curves and use the pencil for shading, you can learn how to get the
portrait of a person on paper using simple techniques.
You need a
good visual sense and an idea of proportion so you can make the
features in your portrait.
Although color pencils can be used, a
simple black and white shaded portrait can be very effective.
• Secure the drawing paper on the board with the adhesive so it does not move while you
draw.
Visually measure the face you want to draw and get an idea of the proportions and
dimensions of it features.
Are the eyes wide set or narrow? Are the lips thin or full? Is
the forehead wide? If you are drawing from a photograph, study it for a few minutes to
get an idea of what the strong features are.
Once you know what to accentuate, begin
your drawing.
• Outline the face with light feathery strokes with the pencil.
