ne of the absolute joys of
following junior golf is that
you get the opportunity to
watch young boys and girls turn into
young men and women.
Then, you get to watch them
hone their skills as they progress
from juniors, high school, college
and, sometimes, even make it to
the pros.
For almost 10 years, Texas golfers
have been closely following the
progress reports on Houston native
Cory Whitsett.
His first competition was in 2001,
when he won The Golf Channel’s
Drive, Chip and Putt competition in
Houston at age 9.
The next year, he won his first
actual tournament and never looked
back.
At the Starburst Junior Classic
in Waco, he won the 9-10 year-old
division with scores of 36 and 38 on
a nine-hole course and a 61 on an
18-hole par-3 course.
He won three more tournaments
that summer,
