y 1920, Houston Country Club was one of
the best golf clubs in the southern United
States.
The rolling, tree-lined course along
Brays Bayou was one of the most picturesque in
Texas.
The ornate clubhouse was a hotspot of
Houston’s social scene.
The best amateur golfers in
the country made an annual pilgrimage to Houston
to play in the club’s prestigious invitational.
But it wasn’t enough.
It was the heyday of the oil business, and
Houston was at its epicenter.
The traditional lumber,
cotton and railroad industries that had been making
Houstonians wealthy for years also were booming.
It was only natural that rich Texans would want to
play golf.
.
.
and 18 holes just couldn’t accommodate
the demand.
Houston was behind the curve.
