year, Curt Maddux gets
a phone call from his friend and
golfing companion Scott Loving.
“It’s Christmas time again,”
Loving says.
“Are you at the
course? Because I am headed
that way!”
Loving and Maddux, both
grown men and successful in
business, are as excited as two
young boys on Christmas Day.
They are headed to Conroe
Country Club for their favorite
week of the year.
It’s the first
day of practice rounds for the
club’s annual invitational.
While most tournaments on
the late, great beer and barbecue
circuit have faded away or
changed to milder best-ball formats, the Conroe tournament is
still going strong after more than
70 years.
It is an invitational in
the truest sense of the word.
