Spain.
She shoots criminals.
The Class A PGA professional in May
pulled a Smith & Wesson .
38 snub-nose
revolver from under her car seat and shot a
carjacker in an Abilene hotel parking lot,
foiling the crime and saving her and her
boyfriend’s lives.
Spain, a Dallas native, was driving from
La Quinta, Calif.
, back to the Metroplex to
take a teaching pro job at Sherrill Park Golf
Course, where she started her career in the
late-1970s.
Only the second woman to
secure her PGA of America classification
when it finally allowed women to become
members in 1980, Spain in the ’70s was an
assistant under former head pro Buster
Creagh.
After a few job changes, including stints
at the Dave Pelz Short Game School and at
Jim McLean’s Academy at PGA West,
Spain taught golf at two exclusive golf
clubs in the Palm Springs area.
With her
mother diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Spain
this year was ready to return full time to
