General Information
Basil is probably one of the best known herbs.
It originated
from India and today there are many different varieties
including purple colored, and lemon scented basil however
by far the most common is sweet basil.
You will most
likely be familiar with this very aromatic herb in Italian
styled dishes.
Growing Basil
• Planting time: Anytime when outdoor temperatures do not drop below 10 degrees celsius
• Depth: Seeds to be only lightly covered
• Rows: 9 – 12 inches apart
• Conditions: Full sun
• Germination: 5 to 10 days
• Maturation Time: 8 – 10 weeks
Basil is a delicate herb and should not be exposed to frosts.
It likes full sun and plenty of water however it
should be planted in rich yet well drained soil as it doesn’t like to have “wet feet”.
Basil can be grown
well indoors in containers even in artificial light.
When planting from seed plant the seeds need only be covered lightly.
As plants grow they should be
thinned out to at least 6 inches
