Judge Eugene Balonon eliminates family court law & motion hearing continuances pursuant to local rule, blames budget problems. Judge Balonon's standing order appears counter-intuitive: One portion of the order requires that a continuance request be made by noticed motion, which will further strain scarce judicial resources. Balonon also does not explain how, logistically, a request for a continuance by noticed motion would be calendared to be heard prior to the initial law and motion hearing. The order reads:
"Whereas the Court is experiencing severe budget constraints and staffing reductions, requests to continue an Order to Show Cause or Notice of Motion hearing on the law and motion calendar will no longer be considered and granted under Local Rule 14.05 by the STIPULATION TO DROP HEARING or ORDER TO SET HEARING process (local court forms FLIE-LP-631 and FL/E-LP-632), effective December 1, 2011.
