Ilooked around the table as my mother took another
larger bite of her Lobster Roll.

my brother, Jeff.
Across the table was my brother, Danny.
And, next to him my father, Carl.
We were celebrating my brother Dan’s fortieth-something birthday, and
we’d all met at a local restaurant for a lunch celebration.
Forty something years old and all of his brothers and sister and his mother and father take time out
of their lives to make sure his day is special.
This scene
gets played out throughout the year for each one of the
family members at the table.
As I look around, I realize this scene happened
last year, five years before and twenty years before.
