Lastyear,theschooldistrictimplemented“greeninitiatives”atallofthebuildingsin
anefforttosavemoneywhilehelpingtheenvironment.
The high school took it a step further this year
by adding additional green goals plus pioneering
single stream recycling.
“Hempfield has become
green crazy,” said Assistant Principal Aaron Steinly.
“What started as a simple paper recycling program has flourished into something one-of- a kind.
”
A summary of the high school’s green accomplishments to date:
• Continuous battery recycling
• Used cell phone recycling drives
• Community “Fugitive Tire Round Up” (collecting
over 200 tires from random local dump sites
sponsored by Student Council)
• A composting project/study (by Mrs.
Lynn
Pomarico’s biology students and the
Westmoreland Cleanways)
• Power Down Campaign (light plate covers to
remind students and teachers to save electricity)
