March 17, 2015 VOL. 59 NO. 6 by Keith Akerlind Lead Reporter In early February, WPXI’s Target 11 researched and reported the safest schools in the Pittsburgh area. Based on recent state school reports, they measured the number of incidents (fighting, harassment, and bullying) against the number of students enrolled. Hempfield was awarded with second place in the Pittsburgh area. Target 11 mentioned the positive, colorful words that the United Spartans club hung around the school. Superintendent Dr. Barb Marin commented, “It’s all about spreading kindness.” Other safe schools include Fort Cherry School District in Washington County, Mars Area School District in Butler County, as well as Pine-Richland and Mount Lebanon in Allegheny County. “I usually feel pretty safe,” said senior Eric Claney “our school has little fights and no gangs. Students aren’t afraid to walk down the halls.” The tragic death of sixteen-year-old student Ryan Mangan hit the Jeannette community in early February. He
