To commemorate this fact, we
will look into the aircraft’s history, which is considered to be
one of the best fighters ever.
It is interesting to realise that
a floatplane design formed the basis for a fighter of which
more than 20.
000 were built.
Specification F.
7/30
In 1930 the Air Ministry issued specification F.
7/30 for a
single-seat day and night fighter with a speed of 195 mph.
It
was to have exceptional manoeuvrability, a longer endurance
than any previous fighter, a low landing speed and a steep
initial climb for night interception, and an excellent allround view.
The armament specified was four Vickers guns,
and two-way radio telephone equipment was to be fitted.
To
meet these requirements a new outlook was needed in fighter
design, which had tended to stagnate since the end of the
First World War.
