A legend suggests that St. Valentine was himself a celibate, but he surreptitiously married young guys who were prohibited to do so as per the law established by Roman Emperor Claudius II. Claudius had a thinking that married guys made for pitiable soldiers. Saint Valentine was arrested on the orders of Claudius and was soon executed. It was not until the Renaissance and middle ages, when the idea of courtly and romantic love started to take hold.
