It is the first day of the year.
As I approach one of the tables
at the New Year’s Day gathering we are attending, someone
remarks that I could be Michael Jackson.
My questioning
look is answered with another question:
“Do you want to be on our float this year?”
That’s it! The collective consciousness has shifted to Carnaval Cozumel 2011.
Though we still have the Three Kings’
Day celebration with its traditional Rosca de Reyes and the
tamalada that follows on February 2nd
, the Christmas Holidays, for some, are officially over.
From now until the burning of Juan Carnaval on March 9th
, no one will be spared
from the tsunami-like spirit of this yearly event that is over
130 years old.
There are many components to Carnival, dances, comparsas, contests, theme parties spiced with traditional regional
foods and music, but perhaps none as well attended and anticipated by the local folk and visitors of all
