looks back on events.

The Epigraph

The epigraph acquires an important symbolism on a number of levels:
1.
Michele’s loss of innocence regarding the way adults can sometimes operate – this loss
of childhood innocence can be seen as a fall into darkness.
2.
Connected to this is the idea that Michele realizes that things are not quite what they
seem – Michele knows about his father’s involvement in the kidnapping of Filippo.
Michele also knows his father is not the person Michele thought he was.
The chapters are not titled or numbered.
